Vaping Facts and Statistics

Vaping has been a popular trend for many years, with more people vaping every year. Today I am going to guide you through some facts and statistics about vaping.

Who Vapes?

According to a study done by the Office of National Statistics, in 2018, 6.3% of British people were vapers, up from 3.7% in 2014. Men were found to vape most, with 7.7% of men vaping, compared to 5.0% of women. People aged between 35 and 49 were most common to vape, with 8.5% being vapers, compared to just 4.4% of people aged 60 or over.

According to the same study, 15% of cigarette smokers vape, compared with only 12.8% of ex-smokers. For people who have never smoked, only 0.8% are vapers, meaning vaping is mostly done by people who also smoke.

Why Do People Vape?

The main reason people vape, according to the study, is to help stop smoking, with 52.8% of vapers vaping for that reason. Most of the other popular reasons are related to replacing cigarettes, with 14.5% of vapers saying it is less harmful than cigarettes, 6.6% saying it is cheaper and 2.7% saying it can be used indoors.

7.9% of people vape for enjoyment, while 1.7% of people vaping because of the range of different flavours. 1.9% enjoy vaping with their friends, 1.3% vape because of the novelty and 10.6% vape for other reasons.

What Flavours Do Vapers Like Most?

According to a study done on the vaping subreddit, the most popular flavour in 2018 was Lemon. Of the top 5 flavours, 3 of them were fruit flavours, compared to 2015 were there were only 2. Tobacco and Menthol were both popular flavours in 2015 and 2018, with tobacco being the number 1 in 2015. This is most likely due to tobacco and menthol cigarettes being popular among smokers so they want a flavour similar to them.

The Vaping Market

The global vape industry was worth $22.6 billion in 2018, from $4.2 billion just a few years ago. Following Japan and the United States, the UK has the third largest vape market, with vapers from the top 3 nations spending a collective $16.3bn in 2016. The US is well ahead, earning about $13 billion while Japan makes around $2 billion.

A survey conducted by Ernst and Young showed that in 2015, most vapers bought their vape products from a specialised e-cigarette shop. The second most-used method of purchasing vape products was online, but there were also people who purchased their items from supermarkets, tobacconists and even bars.

New vapers are thought to buy their first products from a shop so that they can familiarise themselves with the product and get advice on what's best for them. There are an estimated 2000 vape stores in the UK.
